Liberty Commons is named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his leadership in the fight for housing justice.

Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King and Kittitas Counties (Habitat SKKC) has completed Liberty Commons, its largest single-building development to date and the largest multifamily building in Habitat for Humanity’s history.

The five-story community at 5022 Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. has 58 permanently affordable condominiums for local families earning 80% or less of area median income.

The transit-oriented development is two blocks from Columbia City Station.

The building was delivered using a general contractor–led model which Habitat SKKC says supported the greater scale of the project “while maintaining Habitat’s commitment to quality, safety, and long-term durability.” Exxel Pacific was the general contractor and broke ground in the fall of 2024.

JW Architects of Seattle designed Liberty Commons. The unit mix is five studios, 26 one-bedroom units, and 27 two-bedroom units. Home sizes range from 370 to 690 square feet. Condo owners have access to a shared 2,000-square-foot outdoor courtyard and smaller semi-private courtyards along the building perimeter. The TOD has ample bike storage facilities to support car-free living.

As with all new home projects developed by Habitat SKKC, the property will be placed in a land trust to ensure permanent affordability for future generations.

The building is named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his leadership in the fight for housing justice.

Liberty Commons was made possible through the financial support of Washington state, the city of Seattle, the state Department of Commerce, Amazon and the National Housing Trust, Washington Trust Bank, and the state Department of Ecology.

Habitat SKKC will welcome new homeowners and their families to Liberty Commons on July 18 during a home dedication ceremony and neighborhood block party event. Free and open to all, the block party offers the community an opportunity to hear more about Habitat SKKC’s affordable homeownership and repairs programs. Tours of Liberty Commons will also be available. The event is from 1-3 p.m.

Habitat SKKC turned 40 this year.
